2. ON GENUINE HAPPINESS
______________________________________________________

Physician, Albert Schweitzer shares an important truth. "Happiness is nothing more than good health and a bad memory. The only ones among you who will really be happy are those who have sought and found how to serve." Lesson here - the more you give or serve others, the happier you will become. Ghandi also believed, "even as we serve others we are working on ourselves." And so, I became a Rotarian in 1991 to use my hammer so others could have a simple home, to donate clothes and money to those in need in my community and other countries, to spend time with students and seniors while we smile, laugh and enjoy each other .

The Coach sez . . . make it a Happy New Year by giving of yourself. Just begin.

3. ON STORIES
______________________________________________________

What did Presidents Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama all have in common? They used their gut to deliver their ideas and make that magic connection with their audiences. Every successful professional speaker knows that the way to impact their audience is through their story, a story that persuades/inspires the listener to "feel" the truth of your message. And, although it is your story, the audience has a connection with you and are only one step away from their own story. Everyone remembers a good story . . . more than they remember lots of data and facts.

The Coach asks . . . what is your story?

4. ON DEFINING A PROBLEM ______________________________________________________

Einstein is quoted as having said that if he had one hour to save the world he would spend "fifty-five minutes defining the problem and only five minutes finding the solution." When a Toyota executive asked employees to brainstorm "ways to increase their productivity", all he got back were blank stares. When he rephrased his request as "ways to make their jobs easier", he could barely keep up with the amount of suggestions. Words carry strong implicit meaning and how we perceive a problem. 'Be productive' might seem like a sacrifice you're doing for the company, while 'make your job easier' may be more like something you're doing for your own benefit, but from which the company also benefits.

The Coach agrees . . . that the quality of the solutions we come up with will be in direct proportion to the quality of the description of the problem we're trying to solve.

5. ON BEDS
______________________________________________________

Beds, says author James Geary, we can't help but make an impression on them. And so I awake each morning to see what my body recorded- like my sweat, my skin, sometimes blood. Then I see the hallow I produced from my body posture at rest. I am all there. Of joy and sorrow, Lebanese poet Kahill Gibran wrote, "Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed." No wonder I cover my mess each day with a nice bedspread!

The Coach is reminded . . . that most of us begin and end in beds.
