2. ON GETTING ATTENTION
______________________________________________________
Do you sometimes have trouble asking for what you need? I do. Lloyd J.
Thomas, Ph.D. states that the most effective method for getting your
attentional needs met is to ask directly for what you need. You might
say, "Will you help me fold the laundry?" "Will you listen to what I
want to say?" "Will you provide me with three referrals to groups who
would benefit from my presentations?" "Will you give me feedback on my
upcoming speech?" We need to learn to identify what type of attention
we need and then ask somebody directly for it. (This is a no- brainer
for my grandchildren)
The Coach thinks . . . we never outgrow our need for attention from others.

3. ON FOLLOWING UP
______________________________________________________
A study by the Association of Sales Executives revealed that 81% of all
sales happen on or after the fifth contact. If you are a business owner
and making only one or two follow-ups, imagine all the business you're
losing. Not following up with your prospects and customers is the same
as filling up your bathtub without first putting the stopper in the drain!
(David Frey) A follow-up allows you to ask good questions to learn about
your potential client's needs and challenges. A good opportunity for you
to present some possible solutions. That is how someone decides if they
want what you have to offer. That's attractive. Build the relationship
and "the sale" will come. This takes time, like any relationship. Be
patient, be persistent.
The Coach asks . . . what are you doing today to turn your warm/cold
leads in to well served clients?

4. ON GOOD AGING ______________________________________________________
Good news about aging. Researchers have learned that our brains are
just as capable of learning in the second half of life as in the
first half. In addition, we've also learned more by this time,
simply by growing older and having more time to learn. So, in many
ways, the brain is like a new wine, growing richer with each new
season. Nice to know that we and our brains can continue to learn
and become wise together. (?) But, I have noticed that although
my learning may take a bit longer, if I learn something well it
will stick with me. Alfred Lord Tennyson reminds us that,
'Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers.'
The Coach wonders . . . is this the meaning of 'it pays to grow
old?'

5. ON LAUGHING WITH YOUR GRANDCHILDREN
______________________________________________________
Did you know that most adults laugh about 15 times a day? Yet,
research suggests that Toddlers laugh a whopping 400 times a day!
That’s a big difference. So what happens to our sense of playfulness
as we grow older? Why do adults laugh less than children do? Laughter
is a good habit to teach your grandchildren because it will probably
make them healthier and reduce their stress. I bond better when I am
laughing my head off with my grandchildren. . .especially the 5 year old.
The Coach sez . . . laugh at yourself once in a while. It gives your
grandchildren a good example.
