2. ON GOODNESS ______________________________________________________ I recently attended a 10 day silent meditation retreat at Joshua Tree, CA. An occasion to "be out of my mind." Our nurturing teachers encouraged us to value ourselves and others equally. To respond to conflict with patience. To learn to forgive ourselves and approach "our failings with mindful respect." Spiritual teacher, Jack Kornfield, reminds us that Buddhist psychology begins by cultivating respect, starting with ourselves. When we learn to rest in our own goodness, we can see the goodness more clearly in others. The Coach offers the words of Zen master Shunryu Suzuki . . . "You are perfect just the way you are. And . . . there is still room for improvement!" ______________________________________________________3. ON SPEAKING LIKE A PRO Here are some tips to reduce speech anxiety that I have gleaned from working with professional speakers over the last 24 years. Visualize your success at the lectern. 'When you visualize your success, you will be successful.' Arrive early and become familiar with the room in which you will give your presentation. Check the audio/visual equipment as needed. Greet your audience as they arrive in the room. Then the group will not feel like strangers to you. Practice, Practice, Practice your speech beforehand. Remember, it is about them, not you. So harness your nervousness and focus your enthusiasm, your attention, and your message on the audience. The Coach is reminded . . . 'Those who fail to prepare are preparing to fail.' _____________________________________________________4. ON BEING ATTRACTIVE A study by the Association of Sales Executives revealed that 81% of all sales happen on or after the fifth contact. If you are a business owner and making only one or two follow-ups, imagine all the business you're losing. Not following up with your prospects and customers is the same as filling up your bathtub without first putting the stopper in the drain! (David Frey) A follow-up allows you to ask good questions to learn about your potential client's needs and challenges. A good opportunity for you to present some possible solutions. That is how someone decides if they want what you have to offer. That's attractive. Build the relationship and "the sale" will come. This takes time, like any relationship. Be patient, be persistent. The Coach asks . . . what are you doing today to turn your warm/cold leads in to well served clients? ______________________________________________________ 5. ON GOOD AGING Good news about aging. Researchers have learned that our brains are just as capable of learning in the second half of life as in the first half. In addition, we've also learned more by this time, simply by growing older and having more time to learn. So, in many ways, the brain is like a new wine, growing richer with each new season. Nice to know that we and our brains can continue to learn and become wise together. (?) But, I have noticed that although my learning may take a bit longer, if I learn something well, it will stick with me. Alfred Lord Tennyson reminds us that, 'Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers.' The Coach wonders . . . is this the meaning of 'it pays to grow old?' _____________________________________________________6.
