2. ON GROSS NATIONAL HAPPINESS
______________________________________________________

I visited Bhutan in 2006 - one of the world's poorest countries, with a per capita income of $870 per year. The last place on the planet to receive TV and one of the last to log on to the Internet. But what Bhutan lacks materially, it has in other ways. About 35 years ago, the king decided progress should be measured not conventionally, by GDP, but by a Gross National Happiness index that defines riches in terms of sustainability, democratic governance, and environmental and cultural preservation. Buddhist teachings are woven into the national fabric- and so they are "attentive" people who grasp the notion of "impermanence." Nothing is real. They are happy people who function as a community and actually live their Happiness. "Happiness is one hundred percent relational. Where individualism thrives, contentment goes down."

The Coach thinks . . . we are prosperous in the U.S. and eternally optimistic, but only rank 16th on the happiness scale, behind our neighbors Mexico, Canada and Guatemala.

3. ON QUESTIONS
______________________________________________________

Professional and public speakers before they deliver their presentations to any group, need to ask many questions of the program chair so that their material is relevant to that audience. Here are a few to consider:

  • Who will be attending this program? (sexual mix, how many, age range, work titles)
  • What are the goals and objectives of this meeting/program?
  • What results do you expect from me?
  • Will this audience respond to my interactive exercises?
  • How much content, how much entertainment?
  • Very important - are you speaking at a meal event? This is challenging for a speaker - I advise you not to speak over a meal because it is difficult to get and maintain the attention of a group.

The Coach sez . . . speakers who ask many questions prior to an engagement are more successful at the platform.

4. ON THE ART OF SELLING
______________________________________________________

International sales expert and trainer, Brian Tracy, discusses three key result areas of selling to double your sales and your income:

  1. Prospecting - your ability to get "face-to-face or ear-to- ear with qualified prospects who will buy your services/products.
  2. Establish rapport, trust and credibility. People buy from those they like and trust. Are you acting in their best interests?
  3. Identify their needs accurately. What are their unique needs? Don't assume you know what they need. ASK QUESTIONS!

The Coach asks . . . do you prepare thoroughly for your sales conversations, leaving nothing to chance?

5. ON UNIQUE LUNACY

Here are some fun and unreasonable meanings to English words:

The plural of tooth is teeth but the plural of booth is not beeth.

One moose, but not two meese.

If you get rid of a bunch of odds and ends and only keep one of them, is it an odd or an end?

A slim chance and a fat chance can be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites.

When the stars are out, they are visible. But when the lights are out, they are invisible.

The Coach's favorite . . . we have noses that run and feet that smell.
