2. ON ANGER
______________________________________________________

If you were raised as I was, you would have been told to suppress your anger when it arises. So when it arose, I learned to “push it down”, but it continued to fester and never really abated. My suppressed anger resurfaced as passive aggression, unskillful words or actions and sometimes an outburst of rage. What I have learned from spiritual teachers is that anger is never just anger – it is a “concrete, visceral experience, sometimes tightness or pressure,” and my strongly believed thoughts.

The Coach is learning . . . that my thoughts are not The Truth.

3. ON A NEED
______________________________________________________

International speaker/author, Brenda Bence, in her new personal branding book, “How you are Like Shampoo,” defines Need as a problem that requires a solution, or a problem that is currently not being met well enough in the marketplace, and/or a new problem that we didn’t even know existed. She cites Crest as being the first toothpaste after WWII to respond to better cavity protection, Apple designed a more user friendly computer. Gillette developed a razor to provide a closer shave. And Howard Schultz brought us Starbucks to give us 20 minutes back in our day.

The Coach asks . . . do you know what your audience, your customer, your partner needs?

4. ON GEMMELSMERCH
______________________________________________________

Edward Hallowell, M.D., author of Crazy Busy, defines gemmelsmerch as the force that distracts us from what we want or ought to be doing. Some examples:

  • Fixing the computer glitch for 3 hours
  • Reading magazines instead of doing your work
  • The telephone, cell phone, blackberry, or Treo. Turn them off and limit your calls.
  • Television – how much watching is too much?
  • An open door that allows people to pop in
  • Radio talk shows – do you find them addicting and lose focus on what you are doing?
  • The mess – clutter in your office, home or car. File it, shelve it, use it, or throw it away.

The Coach agrees . . . that we need to figure out what matters most to us and do what matters most to us. DON’T GET SIDE- TRACKED.

5. ON WISE WORDS
______________________________________________________

Here are a few wise words and ideas to apply to your life.

  • Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue.
  • Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.
  • If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.
  • If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.
  • Never buy a car you can't push.
  • Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won't have a leg to stand on.

The Coach likes this one . . . “When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.”
