2. ON UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
______________________________________________________

Last week, I spent five days with all of my 7 grandchildren at our annual family reunion. A third of the nation's population, 60 million adults, are now grandparents, according to AARP. So what makes a good grandparent? Probably unconditional love. I practice patience with my grandchildren and love them for who they are. A time to bond, a time to just be present and adore life's major miracle. One grandparent puts it this way: "As grandparents, we discover that we can immortalize ourselves by leaving our soul with a child."

The Coach thinks . . . we can all be grandparents, biologically or not. Every child needs an older person to be crazy about.

3. ON THE HUMOR INJECTION
______________________________________________________

Most professional speakers know that it is important to inject a little humor into their presentations to put themselves, as well as the audience, at ease. They may reveal tales of their most embarrassing moments and how they recovered from them. The listeners are then only a step away from their own stories and find themselves bonding with the speaker. Humor relaxes us and helps our retention of information. When a speaker provides a humorous perspective to his/her audience, they are teaching them to manage life's challenges with less stress.

The Coach thinks . . . there's nothing like a burst of good- natured laughter between people.

4. ON DOING LESS AND LISTENING MORE
______________________________________________________

I never learned much about being a good listener while in school. And yet , I have to practice it all the time . . . with friends, family, clients. Here are some tips from Andrew Weiss on deep listening:

Be present. Give your him/her your complete attention Be aware of what is happening inside you.

Be open. Put aside all your assumptions about who this person is and try to listen to who they are right now. Ask questions that convey your deep concern.

Stay aware of your emotions. Notice what happens to you when you are hearing something you find difficult or painful. Often someone's issues will deeply touch our own. We need to recognize those feelings, breathe deeply, and release those feelings in order to continue listening with attention.

Make space. If emotions run too high, ask for a short break. This may be painful for the other person, but tell them you will be a better listener if you take some time to let your own emotions drain out and do something to feed your compassion and love.


The Coach has learned . . . that sometimes people just want me to listen and then they essentially heal themselves.

5. ON SPEAKING JITTERS
______________________________________________________

Nervous at the podium? You are not alone. According to The Book of Lists, public speaking is the #1 fear among adults. So here are some tips to take the jitters out of your next presentation:

  • Accept your fear and realize that most people cannot sense your nervousness - so stay cool and don't mention that you are nervous. Focus on your enthusiasm.
  • Arrive early and get comfortable with the room and any equipment you need to speak. Greet people as they arrive. This will put you at ease.
  • Most professional speakers do some deep breathing before they speak. Do this about 4-5 times.
  • Speak often - best antidote to minimizing your nerves. Soon you will be comfortable and actually enjoy the experience.
  • Know your audience - be sure to research the company or organization before you speak to them. What are their hot buttons? Their needs? What outcomes do they want from you?
