2. ON SAFARI #2

Two weeks ago I wrote about some of my African safari experiences. And still I think about the mystery of these animals. How they make their lives work without the intellect, language, science and culture that we enjoy as a human beings. They appear to be less destructive of nature than we are. They just seem to make things work and get by. I looked at the lion and wondered what is she thinking? What are her goals in life? Does she ever have a crisis, like me? Amazing . . . animals are so different from us.

The Coach is reminded by Samuel Butler . . . 'Man, unlike the animals, has never learned that the purpose of life is to enjoy it.'

3. ON THREE CUPS OF TEA

The book 'Three Cups of Tea' by Greg Mortenson and David Relin, taught me that ' the first time you share tea with a Balti, ( a people who come from an impoverished area in Pakistan) you are a stranger. The second time you take tea, you are an honored guest. The third time you share a cup of tea, you become family.' And so I must remember to take 3 cups of tea . . . and slow down. Not so important to accomplish everything quickly. To slow down and make building relationships as important as building projects. Another reminder is that I have more to learn from friends, clients and colleagues than I could ever hope to teach them.

The Coach asks . . . are you making time to share three cups of tea?

4. ON MASTERY

I recently attended a conference with 140 master coaches where I was in the presence of George Leonard (pioneer in the human potential movement, co-founder of Esalen Institute, and an aikido sensei with a fifth-degree black belt). George shared the principles of aikido. He shared that the aikido school is an ideal laboratory 'for studying the factors that work for and against long-term learning.' He characterized his students as the dabbler, the obsessive, and the hacker. That these basic patterns tend to prevail, both reflecting and shaping our performance, our character and our destiny. That it is not the most talented who reach the top; that different people may take different paths to mastery; that all paths can lead to the same general direction.

The Coach learns . . . that what is true for aikidoists is also true for the business culture that is always in the process of change.
