2. ON MINDFULNESS
______________________________________________________
Do you get rope burn from holding on to your
own experience? Do you find it hard to let go of
things as you think they should be? I do, sometimes.
And so I return to 'Mindfulness' which brings me the
stillness to keep me from always reacting. Spiritual
teachings suggest we be where we are and not always
look for what is not there. If your life is boring or lonely,
then be bored or be lonely. Bow to it - just be.
The Coach learns . . . that if I try not to make things another
way, wisdom will then prevail.

3. ON NEED TO SPEAK
______________________________________________________
Many of my clients who are professional speakers ask
if they are telling anybody something they don't already
know or need to hear. But they go on because they are
compelled to use the spoken word to inspire others to
think or act differently. For them, speaking is a deep
pleasure. What speakers do is speak; they just can't
help themselves. But isn't language the center, the
essence? People are defined by their language. It is
how we arrive at our concept of life, of death, of sorrow
and of joy. And so the speaker produces a presentation
than can be shared and somehow must be.
The Coach thinks . . . that a speaker is incomplete until
he/she has an audience to listen.

4. ON FEEDBACK
______________________________________________________
Feedback is key to doing our work better, better parenting
better friendships. Yet most people don't seek it; some
wait for it, half hoping it won't come. Without it, as Goldman
Sachs leadership-development chief Steve Kerr says, 'it's as
if you're bowling through a curtain that comes down to knee
level. If you don't know how successful you are, two things
happen: One, you don't get any better, and two, you stop
caring.' Feedback should be part of our culture, our lives.
The Coach sez . . . if you aren't fortunate enough to get
feedback, ask for it.

5. ON BEING A LIAR
______________________________________________________
In adulthood, most people lie routinely to get through
their day; to avoid hurting others' feelings; to cover
our own embarrassments; to spare unnecessary
headaches, and to use as a coping strategy. In one
on-going experiment, people were asked to carry
hidden video cameras and record their conversations
over a few days. After reviewing the video footage,
everyone tallied their own deceptions. The average fib
rate: three for every 10 minutes of conversation.
The Coach thinks...it will be very difficult to give up my
social 'white lies.' And you?
