ON DEATH
_____________________________________________

'If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most
certainly be right.' This made an impression on Steve Jobs, CEO
of Apple Computer and Pixar Animation Studios who told the
2005 Stanford graduates that for the past 33 years, he has looked
in the mirror every morning and asked himself: 'If today were the
last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do
today?' And whenever the answer has been 'No' for too many
days in a row, he knows he needs to change something. 'Because
almost everything--all external expectations, all pride, all
fear of embarrassment or failure--these things just fall away
in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.'

Remembering that you are going to die is the best way he knows to
avoid the trap of thinking he has something to lose. 'You are already
naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.'

3. ON PERSISTENCE
_____________________________________________

I will often ask a potential client if their middle name is 'persistence.
' That's because I believe persistence and tenacity will help them
become sought after professional speakers. Yes, your content and
delivery must be good, but it's persistence that drives your marketing
and promotional efforts. Here are some widely quoted insights:

  • Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.
  • Talent will not; nothing is more common than
  • unsuccessful people
    with talent.
  • Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
  • Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.

The Coach asks . . . what are you doing to 'press on' and become
an expert in your field?

4. ON SERVING

From the get go, Starbuck's founder, Howard Schultz, realized
and trained his managers that they weren't in the coffee business
serving people, but rather in the people business serving coffee.
His vision was to build a company that valued, invested in and
respected its employees. Starbucks now spends more on health
insurance for employees than on coffee beans. Schultz also hosts
frequent town hall meetings with management and employees,
and he personally visits 30 to 40 locations a week to share his
passion, enthusiasm and purpose with his employees.

The Coach sez . . . Starbuck's formula is a 'percolating' success
story.

5. ON GOOD AGING
_____________________________________________

Good news about aging. Researchers have learned that our
brains are just as capable of learning in the second half of life
as in the first half. In addition, we've also learned more by this
time, simply by growing older and having more time to learn.
So, in many ways, the brain is like a new wine, growing richer
with each new season. Nice to know that we and our brains
can continue to learn and become wise together. (?) But, I have
noticed that although my learning may take a bit longer, if I learn
something well it will stick with me. Alfred Lord Tennyson
reminds us that, 'Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers.'

The Coach wonders . . . is this the meaning of 'it pays to grow
old?'
