2.
ON THE SHIFT
_____________________________________________

Gandhi said, 'Live more simply, so others may simply live.' Rather than, 'live and let live.' It feels like this is a time for a universal morality better adapted to the conditions in which humanity finds itself. I just returned from several countries where the average annual income is $500 US or less. Many of the people in these countries did not appear to think that living simply was a form of punishment or sacrifice. On the contrary, they seemed to have more time for a deeper sense of meaning in their lives. They do this by respecting nature, following a belief system that gives them a right to be happy, not to suffer, and a caring for family members.

The Coach invites you . . . to join me in engaging with the world, challenge accepted beliefs and pursue new avenues of personal and social commitment. (Shift with Schrift) _____________________________________________

3. ON SPEAKING INTERNATIONALLY
_____________________________________________

International events, even if your compensation initially sounds
generous are very expensive to do. Gary Goodman gives us five
reasons why:

(1) Prep time is greater. Coordinating with foreign sponsors
requires a lot of give and take and hand-holding. Exchanging
emails, telephone conferences, and other communications are
more cumbersome because of dramatic time zone differences

(2) Travel time is greater than you may think. Of course, you have time in the air to consider, which can involve 15, 20, or more hours, each way.

(3) You're probably not going to go to the far side of the world
without taking at least a few days to see the sights and to
sample the cultural riches before you. This costs money, and
you'll be out-of-pocket for most if not all of these goodies.

(4) You'll be foregoing the sale of the travel days and vacation
days to local clients, who, dollar for dollar, are more profitable
to you.

(5) The futurity of the events, what they can bring in to you in the way of additional business, may be limited or relatively
unattractive, because they, too will require the investment of
time mentioned above to perform.

The Coach thinks . . . it is probably all worth the excitement, the memories and the interesting people you will meet.

4. ON PRACTICE
_____________________________________________

The evidence, scientific as well as anecdotal, seems overwhelmingly in favor of deliberate practice as the source of great performance. But how do you practice business? Geoffrey Colvin, , senior editor-at-large for Fortune Magazine, says many elements of business, in fact, are directly practicable. Presenting, negotiating, delivering evaluations, deciphering financial statements -
you can practice them all. Still, they aren't the essence of great managerial performance. That requires making judgments and decisions with imperfect information in an uncertain environment, interacting with people, seeking information - can you practice those things too? You can, though not in the way you would practice a Chopin etude. Instead, it's all about how you do what you're already doing - you create the practice in your work, which requires a few critical changes. The first is going at any task with a new goal: Instead of merely trying to get it done, you aim to get better at it.

The Coach is learning . . . . that anything I do at work, from the most basic task to the most exalted, is an improvable skill. _____________________________________________

5. ON BEST ADVICE
_____________________________________________

Speaker, author, Paul Thornton collected some 'best advice'
from clients and colleagues. Here is a Top Ten worth remembering.

1. Start by thinking about how you want things to look in the future.
2. Make people feel what you feel before you try to make them see what you see.
3. Attitude is everything.
4. Have a plan and work the plan.
5. Keep learning.
6. People support what they own.
7. Take the risk that others won't.
8. Energize people to follow their hearts.
9. Be a good listener.
10. Let people know you believe in them.

The Coach quotes . . . my mother's best advice -
'This too shall pass.'
