2.
ON REVISITING PEACE
_____________________________________________
What can each of us do to contribute to internal, interpersonal, and organizational peace? Here are some ideas from The Center for Nonviolent Communication www.cnvc.org The founder, Marshal Rosenberg, created a Nonviolent Communication language so all people will get their needs met and resolve their conflicts peacefully.

  • Spend some time each day quietly reflecting on how we would like to relate to ourselves and others.
  • Remember that all human beings have the same needs.
  • Check our intention to see if we are as interested in others getting their needs met as our own.
  • When asking someone to do something, see if we are making a request or a demand.
  • Instead of saying what we DON'T want someone to do, say what we DO want the person to do.
  • Instead of praising someone who did something we like, express our gratitude by telling the person what need of ours that action met.

The Coach thinks . . . it is very hard to unlearn violent communication and replace this with NVC. I am committed!

3. ON MAKING HEADLINES
_____________________________________________

Here are a few ideas from Maggie Dennison, Marketing Writer and Consultant , to help you craft attention- getting headlines for a press release or speech title.

  1. Build your headline around your biggest benefit. Show how your product or service can solve a problem for the reader.
  2. Create a mystery with the headline so that you arouse curiosity and make the reader want to read on to find the solution.
  3. Use figures or statistics. Odd numbers work better than even. Percentages are also good.
  4. Rephrase a well-known saying or quote.
  5. Ask a question the answer to which points to, guess what? Your product or service. The Coach like this one . . . "How to Become a Highly Paid Professional Speaker"
    www.schrift.com/cds.htm What's your best headline?

4. ON LIFE-LESSONS FROM NOAH'S ARK
_____________________________________________

ACoach James Vuocolo gets direction from the Biblical story of the great flood. (Genesis 6:1-9:17) Do these lessons apply to your life?

  • Always plan ahead. (there was no rain in the forecast when Noah started to build the ark)
  • Don't listen to your critics. Listen to your heart and do what needs to be done.
  • Don't go it alone. Travel in pairs, because two heads are better than one.
  • Be flexible in your thinking. Remember amateurs built the ark while professionals built the Titanic.

The Coach sez . . . don't miss the boat! Aren't we all in the same boat?

5. ON THEM, NOT YOU
_____________________________________________

What do great speakers do to guide their audiences? First, they share what they know to be true. They understand that they are not the focus. Their audience is. Great speakers have a passion for their material; a passion for teaching. The desire is infectious. If the speaker has it, the audience will most likely catch it. Great speakers practice vulnerability on the platform, not as a sign of weakness, but as a way to connect honestly with their audiences. If you don't fully know yourself, you can't fully know your audience, and therefore, you can't connect with them.

The Coach thinks jazz musician, Charlie Parker, put it best . . . "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn."
