2. ON UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

Last week, I spent five days with all of my 7 grandchildren at our annual family reunion. A third of the nation's population, 60 million adults, are now grandparents, according to AARP. So what makes a good grandparent? Probably unconditional love. I practice patience with my grandchildren and love them for who they are. A time to bond, a time to just be present and adore life's major miracle. One grandparent puts it this way: "As grandparents, we discover that we can immortalize ourselves by leaving our soul with a child."

The Coach thinks . . . we can all be grandparents, biologically or not. Every child needs an older person to be crazy about.

3. ON TREASURE HUNTING

In this era of smart. strategic shopping, I find that companies are changing goods into "treasures," not just bargains. They are innovating and improving relentlessly, while just as relentlessly driving costs down. Michael Silverstein says, "the new cheap is not just cheap; it's good." Research states that about 46% of US shoppers trade down at Costco, treasure hunt at Trader Joe's, and trade up at Whole Foods, Wegmans and other such stores. Harvard Business Review editor, David Champion states: "Discount shopping is about gaining control, achieving goals and attaining the things that matter most."

The Coach asks . . . can so many women be driving these changes?

4. ON THE HUMOR INJECTION

Most professional speakers know that it is important to inject a little humor into their presentations to put themselves, as well as the audience, at ease. They may reveal tales of their most embarrassing moments and how they recovered from them. The listeners are then only a step away from their own stories and find themselves bonding with the speaker. Humor relaxes us and helps our retention of information. When a speaker provides a humorous perspective to his/her audience, they are teaching them to manage life's challenges with less stress.

The Coach thinks . . . there's nothing like a burst of good- natured laughter between people.

5. ON THE SUBJECT LINE

Sheryl Lindsell-Roberts reminds us that the subject line is the most important piece of information in an email message. It's the first and only hint as to what your message is about, unlike a letter or memo where the body is in full view. If your subject line doesn't seduce your readers, they may never open your message. If you look down the subject line column of your inbox, perhaps you see subject lines such as these that give you absolutely no information and no reason to check the message: Meeting; Two Things; Something else; Can you help me?

The Coach now knows . . . to include a key piece of information in my subject line, so my reader can get the gist of my message at a glance.
