2. ON THE SPIRIT OF
THE FOURTH
I do a lot of flying with Southwest Airlines. An airline that
constantly reminds me of the spirit of innovation, good values
and entrepreneurism. Qualities that also became the flagship for
the creation of the United States of America . Herb Kelleher,
the maverick and innovative founder of Southwest runs a "spirit
campaign." They constantly tell the world that their employees
are warm and caring, and provide superior customer service. They
know their business. They hire people who are servant leaders,
have good values, and are extroverts in their behavioral style.
They are doers. They lead, not manage.
The Coach believes . . . that the key to success is to have
the courage to do things differently.
3. ON SKNOCKOUT PRESENTATIONS
Dianne DiResta, author of Knockout Presentations: How to
deliver your message with power, punch and pizzazz, offers
some tips for helping your audience listen to you.
- HAVE A CONVERSATION: Use the word "you" in your talk, as in
"Ask yourself . . . ," What would you do . . . and so on.
- GET PERSONAL: Use your own experiences in your speech. People
relate better to other people.
- KEEP IT CURRENT: talk about today's events or tomorrow's meeting.
- PRESENT WITH PASSION: Enthusiasm is contagious. INVOLVE THE
AUDIENCE: Ask attendees to come up on stage and assist you with
the presentation.
The Coach sez . . . it is about them, not you!
4. ON RESILIENCE
Why can't the stock market have a springy attitude and the ability
to recover quickly? Well, we see this has not been easy to attain,
yet many successful people have the ability to demonstrate personal
elasticity. So how can we learn to be more "rubbery"? Dr. Michael
Mantell offers three ways to build resilience. They are:
- Trust others to help you. Have a mentor to avoid being sad
and vulnerable in the face of challenges.
- Develop the inner strengths of confidence , self- esteem and
responsibility. Make your own decisions, including ones that
later may appear to have been mistakes.
- Acquire the interpersonal and problem solving skills that
help you to take action. Successful people eliminate negative
thinking.
The Coach sez . . . "catch people doing something right."
5. ON DEMEANING
If lawyers can be disbarred and clergy can be defrocked doesn't
if follow that: (From the Best of We Go)
--Electricians can be delighted?
--Musicians denoted?
--Cowboys deranged?
--Models deposed?
--Dry cleaners decreased, depleted, and depressed?
--Supreme Court justices disappointed?
--Baseball players debased?
--Songwriters decomposed?
--Teachers detested?
The Coach asks . . . can you come up with one for speakers?
E-mail me your suggestions and I will send you a gift.
