Question:

I would love to gain more exposure to the profession of public speaking. I know that I need more practice in front of groups. Who do you recommend contacting for giving free speeches?

The Coach Sez:

Thank you for writing. You must first have a topic to speak on that feeds your passion and that others need to hear about. Then you can practice your program at local service clubs; Rotary, Lions, Soroptomists, and weekly networking groups. They all need speakers.

Question:

I have so much material on suicide prevention on never giving up and going after your dreams my personal experience gives me credentials I just don't know where to start? People say my stuff should be in a book. But, I say no. I need to speak. What do you do when you have so much material?

The Coach Sez:

Thank you for writing, Barbara. First you put your material into different file folders and label them. Example: Stories, content, graphics, etc. But this may also be overwhelming for you. Listen to tapes and hear speakers who also speak on your topic. See/listen to how they organize their material

Question:

How do you get the first gig that's good enough to produce the video that prospects and bureaus want? I'm sure a tape with too small a group or too informal a setting won't cut it.

The Coach Sez:

Thank you fro writing. Here are some tips.

  1. You need an audience of about 40-50 people minimum.

  2. Depending on your topic, the audience should be in appropriate attire e.g. business or business casual.

  3. A two camera shoot is best

  4. Keep your video demo short - 15 minutes maximum. . . less is better

Question:

What is the most effective method you know for establishing eye contact? Both my daughter and I have real problems in this area, both in individual and group peaking situations. Any suggestions you may have would really help.

The Coach Sez:

Here are my suggestions:
When you speak to groups, focus on one person at a time for several seconds. Then move on to another person. When you do this, all of the people in your audience will appreciate your "being there" with and for them.

When you are speaking to an individual, it is important to look at them. This makes the person feel as if you are really listening to him/her. They are feeling "heard." Isn't this what you want to happen? When you do this, you are saying, "I am interested in you and what you have to say." I think this is not only polite but good communications behavior. Don't you?

Question:

I have an imaginary dog named Chico who wants to become a guest speaker for whatever organization is willing to listen. You say, "But does he know anything about anything?" to which I respond, "How many dogs do you know that can talk, debate and provide advice?" Any suggestions?

The Coach Sez:

I suggest you have Chico contact me directly.
