Question:

I am interested in becoming a paid speaker. I worked with you in the past. I am now the owner of a Curves exercise club for women and would like to speak on employee wellness (especially for women) in corporations. Is there a market for this and what is the best way to approach it

The Coach Sez:

Good to hear from you. There is a speaking market for health and wellness. I suggest you come up with a sizzling title for your presentation and show how wellness affects the bottom line in productivity. Contact a few women who work in corporate America and get their feedback on what kind of a presentation would be beneficial to them.

Question:

I was wounded in Iraq in 2003. I have overcome every obstacle thrown at me and I want to tell people about. I feel I was kept in this world to do this, but it has been hard to get people to notice me. Im a spokesman for an organization & have made many tv, radio, print, & speaking engagements. What should I do to get noticed by a speaking bureau?

The Coach Sez:

Thank you for writing, Jose. You appear to have an inspiring story and message. However, do not approach a speaker bureau until you are packaged and have had a number of paid speaking engagements. To start, you will need an excellent speech, a one page, a video demo, some testimonials and a speaking fee that is at least $3000.00 If you are not this far along, you should consider working with a coach to help you get there.

Question:

I appear worldwide on Home Shopping Networks with my own skincare products. I also do motivational speaking in the prison system here in Nashville... I am 60 a cancer survivor and life survivor... It is my dream to become a motivational speaker. I am already doing it on TV and would like to go out and speak to groups of women on aging, surviving, enjoying life, accepting yourself... I am looking forward to your reply..

The Coach Sez:

Thank you for writing, Betty. You appear to be passionate about your message and I am sure that many women need to hear your message. There are several steps you would need to take to prepare yourself to be a paid professional speaker.

You will need:

a press kit (brochure and video demo)

client/speaker contract

fee schedule

marketing know how (target markets)

Are you prepared to invest your time and some money to do this? We have a program on CDrom (6 hours) if you are self directed to learn these steps.

schrift.com/shopping.html You can also hire a coach, like me, to work one to one.

Question:

I am interested in transitioning to a career in speaking. I am not quite sure where to begin. I have what I and others believe to be compelling material that can be adapted in to a seminar format. What can you suggest? Thank you.

The Coach Sez:

Thank you for writing, Matthew. I can suggest several things.

1. First be sure that what you plan to speak on is something many people need to hear and would benefit from. (solve their problem and/or provide a desired outcome)

2. Then seek out a product that tells you what steps to take to get going. Sample products are at: www.schrift.com/success_resources.htm

3. Hire a coach to cut your learning curve, get you down the right path to achieve your desired outcome.

The Coach sez . . .take at least one action now and begin!

I hope this is helpful.

Question:

I am ready to coach by phone. Have my topic, materials, confidence. I even know my target audience. Ready to go. My? Is what is the least expensive/most effective way to contact them. I could put a notice in the paper of their interest (expensive), put a notice on a web site read by them, send mass mailings (not effective I think). Would love to have your thoughts. Continue your great newsletter.

The Coach Sez:

Thanks for your question. You pretty much answered your own question. A major, inexpensive way to contact people about your programs is to do it through a select group of advocates. These are people who know clearly what you offer and will promote you to those who need speakers on your topic. Keep in touch with your advocates at least once a month by phone, fax, email or face to face meetings to keep them updated about your speaking career and to express appreciation for their continued active support.

Question:

I am a powerful writer. I have held my audience spell bound through my speeches and communications. Yet, I have not turned it around to be paid speaker or writer, even when I need to make a living. I work part time as an interpreter. I am living on my savings, which will not last forever. What is the step by step procedure and how do I address and overcome any mental blocks I may have?

The Coach Sez:

Thank you for writing. Your challenge with a "mental block" cannot simply be answered by a short email I don't know anything about you or why you have this problem.

You write, "I have held my audience spell bound through my speeches and communications." Then what is your mental block? Suggestion: Remember if you have something to say that people need to hear, then don't be a secret. Let people know you are available. Prepare a press kit with your one page and video demo to distribute to your targeted audiences. Yes, this takes some time/money investment. But, aren't you worth it?

Question:

My name is Hollis Conway and I am a celebrity athlete. I have two Olympic medals in the high jump. I am in a small town where there is hardly any corporations. I have been speaking for a couple of years and have been very busy. I would like to do more corporate presentations but I need to know how to get a foot in the door. I have done a few presentations and the response has been awesome. Please help.

The Coach Sez:

Thanks for writing. Yes, Olympic athletes are always popular with audiences. You get an audience's respect for your discipline and follow through. Excellent values for all of us to have.

I am sure I can help you "get through the corporate doors' but, that would require us doing some coaching together. If this is something you have the time and budget to pursue, email me for a 30 minute complimentary coaching call.

Question:

Hi, I am actually a very good friend of Amy's I n NYC. We were in Costa Rica together. I am very happy to here you are doing raw!! Well my question is; how do I go about getting jobs doing public speaking? I would really love to do public speaking about raw foods but for now wouldn't mind to do any type of public speaking to get practice.

I am not sure how one gets to the point that they are able to speak about a topic if you haven't written a book or aren't some notable person in the field. I know you have to start somewhere though.

The Coach Sez:

Yes, you need to begin speaking - on something that you have a passion about and that people need to hear. If you want a step by step approach, you could order my audio tape program or 3 cd Rom program on how to do this. Either program comes with email PDF handouts and a 20 minute coaching call with me. I have a summer special going on now for these products. You can see them at schrift.com/fall-frenzy.html Visit my website for some "free' tips and other helpful resources at schrift.com
